Feeding pelicans on Phillip Island

San Remo is a scenic location located at the entrance to Phillip Island. Many visitors often pause here to feed the pelicans in San Remo.

Pelicans gather at the jetty on the foreshore daily at noon to be fed.

Feeding pelicans in San Remo has a history

The San Remo Fisherman’s Co-op has a history of feeding pelicans dating back to local fishermen giving them fish offcuts. The Pelican Feeding has been happening daily at noon since 1985, when Warren Dickie started feeding them regularly. The pelicans now gather at that time in anticipation of being fed. San Remo is known for its fresh seafood, making it a popular spot for the pelicans to enjoy a meal.

Much like many Aussies who reckon living by the sea and tucking into fresh seafood is the go, the wild Pelicans down at San Remo Pier are on the same wavelength. They’re all about that fresh seafood life, too!

The Aussie Pelican stands out because it’s mostly a stark white, except for a splash of colour on its wing tips and boasts the most enormous beak in the birdie world. And, crikey, do they work those massive beaks to snap up grub and show off to potential mates?

The idea behind the no-cost Pelican Feeding show at midday isn’t just to fill up these peckish birds and have a bit of a spectacle for the crowd. Still, it’s also about schooling the public on Pelicans – their munch habits, way of life, and how we can chip in to better conserve and protect these Aussie legends and their mates. The number of wild Pelicans at San Remo can swing from 5 to 35. This shebang is run by folks who know their stuff, doesn’t cost a dime and is kept in check by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

After you’ve had a gander at the Pelican Feeding, stroll down the San Remo Pier jetties. Here, you can spot a big family of Stingrays often cruising around in the water from this spot. Though, after watching the Pelicans scoff down all that yummy fresh fish, it’s tough not to wander over to the San Remo Fishermans Co-op for some ace fish & chips for yourself.
